Angle detector ?

So I started playing around with a accelerometer and was able to get it to give me the readings I'm after but, when I looked at the project as a whole I got a little concerned about how much I'll be demanding on the boat's "brain" (Arduino Mega). So I've decided to go a little low-tech to resolve this problem. This 1/4" Plexiglas wedge is the weight for my 'angle detector'. The hole at the point to the left is where the linear potentiometer dial will be placed. Essentially this weight will take the place of a knob, and turn the potentiometer as the boat angle changes. The reading from the center pin will give me a live reading without the Arduino doing any number crunching. The various circles are locations I can place weights later if I need them.
